Fiona has been working as a psychologist for more than 25 years, and the majority of this has been in private practice in Melbourne.  She has engaged in intensive training and ongoing professional development in adult psychoanalytic psychotherapy with the Victorian Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists (VAPP).

Fiona provides short and longer-term psychotherapy for adults, and clinical supervision for psychologists and counselling practitioners.  Fiona is guided by contemporary psychoanalytic theories of psychotherapy; and works with individuals to gradually and deeply explore thoughts, feelings and experiences in order to open up pathways for new possibilities. The therapy relationship creates a safe container for this exploration of conscious and unconscious dynamics that have often developed during childhood, and continue to have an impact on patterns and difficulties experienced in adult life. This therapeutic process allows individuals to make sense of and integrate less conscious aspects of themselves in order to lead to a more fulfilled and meaningful life.

Common psychological struggles:  Fiona has many years of experience in working with individuals who seek help for a range of common psychological difficulties, including: depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, and life transitions.

Trauma:   Fiona has worked extensively with individuals who have experienced troubling or traumatic experiences and events in childhood and adulthood. This has led to a particular interest in attachment difficulties, dissociative disorders and post-traumatic stress.

Women’s issues:   Much of Fiona’s clinical work has focussed on assisting women to work though difficult or challenging life experiences.  This has included relationship issues, fertility difficulties, pregnancy loss, postnatal depression and parenting.  Fiona also has a long-standing interest in assisting new mothers to adjust to motherhood, and to attend to painful issues that may arise in family relationships during this sensitive time of transition and change.  In addition, Fiona works with women and men who have body image concerns, and has an interest in assisting individuals to improve their relationship with their physical selves.

LGBTIQ and sexual health issues:   Fiona has also spent a number of years in private practice at a Melbourne sexual health clinic where she worked with patients from the LGBTIQ communities.  She has an interest in promoting positive health and identities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer-identifying individuals.  She also works with heterosexual patients wanting to explore sexual health concerns. Fiona is committed to providing non-pathologising psychotherapy for individuals from diverse backgrounds and identities.

Fiona has an interest in mentoring and supervising early career psychologists and psychotherapists with an interest in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
